Unmarried Couples – your rights
When an unmarried couple’s relationship ends you are afforded little protection and certainly not the same rights as divorcing couples.
Unmarried couples may still have to deal with financial issues after your separation. For example, if you have a property which you own jointly with your partner or where the property is solely in your partner’s name and you have been contributing towards the mortgage and up keep of the property.
If you and your partner are not agreeable as to what happens to the property or you now find that your partner denies you having any right over the property, the only claim that you can potentially make is under The Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act 1996.
